For further information, visit: http://www.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ous/international/usnei/us/edlite-visitus-forrecog.html.The Hershel"Woody" Williams VAMC is seeking a permanent full-time Orthopedic Surgeon to assume a staff position. The facility is seeking candidates with excellent clinical skills and experience in the full range of general orthopedic care including major joint replacement. Duties include but are not limited to the following:


  • Provide direct patient care as well as resident supervision and clinical instruction in the operating room, outpatient clinic and inpatient settings
  • Provides surgical services and diagnostic procedures that are clear, concise, and in keeping with modern medical terminology.
  • Provide immediate evaluation and management of emergent problems as they occur to individuals presented for care. Provides professional advice to Surgical staff upon request and in emergency situations with regard to professional management of patients being treated
  • Facilitates patient access to medical care by recommending appropriate referrals to other health care providers in accordance with applicable policies and regulations.
  • Other duties as assigned.


    Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, occasional call

    Recruitment/Relocation may be authorized for highly qualified applicants.

    PCS may be authorized for highly qualified applicants.

    EDRP: This position is may be eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan reimbursement program within VHA.To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 12/31/2020.

    Basic Requirements:


    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
    • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
    • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
    • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
    • Physical requirements outlined below.


      Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

      Physical Requirements: The physician should be physically and mentally capable to perform the duties of the position including examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan and educate residents. Physical activities include sitting, standing (up to 4 hours) walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. The incumbent should be emotionally and mentally stable; and capable to perform the duties of the position.
