Managing the medical equipment management program. Ensuring that
medical equipment is safe for patients and staff, reliable in its
results, and experiences minimal downtime.
Performing as a working Biomedical Engineer and having full
administrative and professional oversight and supervision of the
Biomedical Engineering Section. Supervising (5) GS-11 Biomedical
Equipment Support Specialists, (2) GS-12 Biomedical Equipment
Support Specialists, and (1) GS-12 Supervisory Biomedical Equipment
Support Specialist. Providing the associated supervisory functions
such as recruiting, orientation, duty assignments, and performance

Information Technology and Infrastructure
Developing and implementing physiological monitoring, automation
in clinical laboratories, patient resuscitation, computer
applications in biomedicine and medical information systems,
patient security and alarm systems, etc.
Establishing controls and procedures and monitoring
implementation to assure that all electronic devices and systems,
and computers related to patient care equipment are utilized
efficiently and safely. Observing and critiquing the use of these
devices. Evaluating the patient safety features of electrical
equipment and oversees the patient electrical safety program for
the medical center.
Ensuring that HIPAA and network security issues are managed
effectively for medical systems. This includes very substantial
pre-purchase planning in coordination with the IT department and an
equally large commitment of resources for installation of these
networked systems. Documentation of such systems including details
such as backup, disaster recovery, security, etc. is also difficult
in scope but critical to management of the networked systems.
Participating as a member of the VISN 5 Biomedical Engineering
Committee. At the medical center, the incumbent actively
participates with the Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) committee,
the Environment of Care (EOC) committee, Commodities,
Pre-Procurement and Equipment Committees.
Managing medical equipment recall and hazard alert programs.

Biomechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical
Engineering, and Biochemical Engineering. Titles may vary from
educational institutions and change over time.

- Grandfathering Provision. All persons employed in VHA in this
occupation, on the effective date of this qualification standard,
are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the
title, series and grade held, including positive education, and/or
certification/registration that are part of the basic requirements

Grade Determinations: Supervisory Biomedical Engineer
- Experience. Completion of at least one year of experience
equivalent to the next lower level, and must fully meet the KSAs at
that level. This experience includes but is not limited to the
following: Working under general supervision, with wide latitude to
exercise independent judgment. Drawing upon extended professional
and technical experience, demonstrating an intimate understanding
of complex clinical and biomedical subject matter. Serving as
institutional resources, working extensively with clinical
stakeholders, supporting clinical services by leading market
research, technology assessments, integration planning, and
implementation of both current and emerging medical technologies.
Sharing responsibility for managing the Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), network security issues
for medical systems, and the information communicated across these
systems. As a Biomedical Engineers at the GS-12 grade level you
would have further supported the clinical mission by contributing
to the continuing education program for clinical staff, helping
ensure safe and efficient healthcare delivery. At the GS-12 grade
level, you would have supported the institution by assisting with
capital asset and infrastructure planning, to help ensure
successful strategic planning. You may have collaborated frequently
with contracting to execute judicious healthcare technology
procurements. Within the Biomedical Engineering Department, you
would have provided leadership that ensured high quality and
responsive customer service as an integral component of biomedical
engineering service delivery. You are an highly effective
communicator, capable of serving as subject matter experts directly
supporting the life cycle management of clinical technology, to
include ongoing service, system administration, training, and
quality assurance. At the GS12 level you could have assisted in
clinical research projects in the biomedical engineering
